It is a fragment (with a section of sky at the top cut off) of a so-called behangsel: large painted canvases that were built into wooden paneling to form a ‘room in the round’. This is rare cultural heritage. Of the brothers Jacob van Strij and Abraham van Strij, very little painted work has survived in Dordrecht in its original setting.
